In praise of live music, and its many Southern California venues

When Martha and the Vandellas described summer life in 1964's "Dancing in the Street," they sang, "All we need is music, sweet music, there'll be music everywhere." Little could they have known our future relationship with sound.

More than ever, music surrounds us, accompanies us, pursues us, so much so that few feel the need to seek it out. If the so-called songs of the summer don't arrive voluntarily via earbuds, car stereo, television or home system, they're piped in at Ralphs or seep out of tinny outdoor speakers at the gas station.

Old-time music at a ranch? It's an American idyll

It is late in the afternoon, that time when the light begins to soften and the orange groves seem to shiver in the breeze. More than six dozen people have piled into a century-old farmhouse in the Santa Clara River Valley for an old-time music concert.

John Grimm and Beverly Smith, a pair of musicians from northern Georgia, lightly pick at the strings of their guitars. Notes reach up and then tumble down as they launch into the Carter Family tune "East Virginia Blues #2."

"I am just from East Virginia, with a heart so brave and true," the pair sings, Smith's twangy vocals bubbling up above Grimm's lower register. "And I learned to love a maiden with eyes of heavenly blue."

Disneyland's 24-hour marathon presents a challenge she can't resist

Survivors will remember it as the night they shut ol' Disney down.

A 24-hour day at the Disneyland Resort always gets a little crazy. But this year was record-breaking crazy. The eyes of even the most seasoned pass holders and employees will widen in memory of Memorial Day weekend 2015.

Disneyland turns 60 this summer, you see, and like any self-respecting diva of a certain age, she's had a little work done. But where others might take things slowly, make changes gradually, Disneyland characteristically decided to go in another direction.

To celebrate the diamond jubilee, the park has a new parade, a new fireworks display and a new "World of Color" show. Sleeping Beauty Castle has been bedazzled and many old rides thematically tweaked, and of course there's a whole line of anniversary merchandise including special-edition everything.

Water show gets 'spectacular' reboot at Disney's California Adventure

In celebration of Disneyland’s 60th anniversary, the "World of Color" water show at Disney California Adventure will get a new story overlay dedicated to the history of Walt Disney and his first theme park.

Starting May 22, "World of Color" water show joins a new nighttime parade and new fireworks display across the esplanade at Disneyland as part of a diamond jubilee celebration that’s expected to stretch through the end of the year and beyond.

Disneyland's 60th Anniversary: Overview | Parade | Fireworks | Ride Updates

Dubbed “Celebrate,” the new "World of Color" overlay will hopefully offer a much-needed break from the recent trend of turning shows, parades and nighttime spectaculars into little more than a cavalcade revue of popular Disney characters strung together with the loosest semblance of a story line. The compelling “Celebrate” story seems like a fresh departure from the recent broad stroke appeal-to-the-masses approach to entertainment at the parks.

During a recent press preview, I watched rough animation of “Celebrate” and found the show to be even more spectacular than before -- if that’s possible.

Lana Del Rey in a forest looking off in the distance.

Born in New York City in 1986, Lana Del Rey, an American singer-songwriter made her big splash in the music world with the debut of her second studio album, Born to Die, released in January 2012, and re-released in November 2012 as the Paradise Edition with seven new songs.

Del Rey is an indie version of Katy Perry, infused with deeper vocals, sexualized lyrics, and her trademark – 1960s "gangsta Nancy Sinatra" style, with a slower tempo. Her music has a hauntingly beautiful nostalgic texture, like Marylyn Monroe's breathy serenade to JFK on his birthday (hence Del Rey's re-enactment of this historical event in her music video for "National Anthem"). She sings about her fantasies of embarking on a forbidden love and digressing from society's conventional expectations.

Beer events season Los Angeles is in full swing in Southern California

You’re going to have a busy weekend if you’re a craft beer lover in the Southland. With vegan brews, an airshow and a celebration of the lighter side of beer, Saturday and Sunday are packed with can’t-miss events. If you’re a beer lover or just beer curious, these celebrations of craft culture are great ways to discover new brews and meet some new friends.

Naja’s Place IPA fest
The special brews start pouring on Wednesday at Redondo Beach craft institution Naja’s Place as the seventh annual IPA Fest gets underway with a showcase of local breweries and over 60 IPAs on tap. The celebration of craft beer’s most popular style runs through Tuesday and features a lupulin-laden list for the whole week. On Thursday, Ballast Point headlines with five variations of the ever-popular Sculpin IPA, and on Saturday Pizza Port brings a baker’s dozen of IPAs for fans to sample. Expect lines and crowds, and some of the freshest hop-bombs in town.

Hangar 24 Airfest
The Redlands Airport-adjacent brewery is celebrating its lucky seventh anniversary as only they can — with an all day airshow/beerfest. In addition to several pouring stations serving up Hangar 24’s year-round and special-release beers, there’s a fleet of food trucks, several bands, and of course a lineup of aerial demonstrations, stunt planes and skydivers. 'Jem and the Holograms' trailer: '80s toon gets a millennial makeover

It's showtime for the first "Jem and the Holograms" trailer, which offers a 2 1/2-minute look at director Jon M. Chu's live-action adaptation of the 1980s animated series.

Fans of Hasbro's "truly outrageous" toon about a young woman masquerading as a pop star with the help of a holographic supercomputer will no doubt notice that the campiness of the original has been dialed down for the big screen, the better to focus on millennial angst in the social-media age.

Set for release Oct. 23 from Universal Pictures, "Jem" stars Aubrey Peeples as Jerrica, a shy but musically talented teen living "the most unexceptional life" with her sister (Stefanie Scott) and foster siblings (Hayley Kiyoko and Aurora Perrineau) — until a surreptitiously recorded video of her performing turns her into a viral sensation.

Made over and rechristened Jem by Juliette Lewis' unscrupulous record exec (is there any other kind in movies like this?), the starlet soon has to deal with the demands of newfound fame while staying true to herself and her sibling band mates (the titular Holograms).

Stardom, the girls are told, will require "changing the way you act, sound and look."

Locals invited to Rock in Rio, Day 1 -- for free

Angelica Govaert had absolutely zero interest in attending Rock in Rio.

Music festivals -- and their long lines, massive crowds and unpredictable weather -- aren't her bag. Nor was she keen on the lineup of rock acts. "I haven't liked No Doubt since college," she said with a laugh.

Yet, here she was, taking in the sights of one of three themed "Rock Streets" on Day 1 of the international festival's U.S. debut. The yoga instructor's change of heart had nothing to do with the music or the crisp breeze that made Friday afternoon in the Vegas desert unseasonably cool.

It was the free tickets.

Govaert was one of hundreds of residents at nearby high rises offered day passes to the festival, totally gratis. She was surprised by the gesture, but praised the organizers' act of goodwill.

"I would have heard [everything] anyway," Govaert said, pointing toward her building, a stone's throw away from the festival grounds. "And I have, all week, as they prepared."

Chris Burden dies at 69: artist's light sculpture at LACMA is symbol of L.A.

When he had himself shot in the arm for a performance piece at a Santa Ana gallery, Chris Burden became fleetingly famous. But years later, when he created such outsized, imagination-charged works as “Urban Light,” the ranks of vintage lampposts tightly arrayed outside the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, he left a longer-lasting legacy.

Burden, the protean Conceptual artist who rose from doing controversial performances in the 1970s to become one of the most compelling and widely admired sculptors of his generation, died Sunday at his home in Topanga Canyon. He was 69.

Paul Schimmel, a close friend of the artist and the former chief curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art who had organized Burden’s first retrospective exhibition in 1988, said the cause was malignant melanoma. Burden was diagnosed 18 months ago, Schimmel said, but kept the information private except for a few family members and friends.

Caroll Spinney tells us what it's like inside 'Sesame Street's' Big Bird suit

There aren't many octogenarian entertainers who have managed to stay relevant in the ever-changing cultural zeitgeist, but then there haven't been many people who have played Big Bird. Caroll Spinney helped create the big yellow bird for PBS' "Sesame Street" in 1969, and he's been playing the character ever since.

And if that isn't impressive enough, he's also played Oscar the Grouch for the same number of years. Although Big Bird is an international star, Spinney, 81, has mostly remained hidden behind the feathers. But an Oscar season parody of the film "Birdman" titled "Big Birdman Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Orange Pants)," which went viral, and the new documentary "I Am Big Bird: The Caroll Spinney Story" (opening May 15) are finally giving the veteran puppeteer his due. And as "Sesame Street" heads into its 46th season, he has no plans to retire.

Watching "I Am Big Bird" is a very emotional experience for someone who is just a fan. How was it for you to watch?

What does such a picture beautiful. We have this picture of www.localeventsrental.com (to be honest, but we had this kind of great barns in the Los Angeles) and want you to know that such decoration is possible in our little country. We make such a beautiful ceiling decoration for your custom. It may also be from a center in "round" shape. We can also bring such a wonderful chic chandelier. Of course for this type of decoration are certain necessary requirements. First, there should be good suspension options and we should be able to come in height. We have the materials, you have such a great wedding venue? We hear very much of you!

Mayweather vs. Pacquiao: Celebrities gather for fight night

At times, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao's buzzed-about boxing match felt more like an award show. That's because Showtime and HBO's live special brought out stars like Beyoncé and Jay Z, Ben Affleck, and Drew Barrymore — just to name a few. Before Floyd beat Manny on Saturday, reporters interviewed plenty of the celebrities in the audience, including Tom Brady. Continuing his fun spree since his glorious Super Bowl victory with the New England Patriots, the quarterback kicked back at the fight on the same day he hit up the Kentucky Derby. Meanwhile, Justin Bieber was on hand to support his pal Floyd. Justin even joined the boxer and his entourage for the prefight walk through the MGM Grand Garden Arena. As musicians like Justin and Beyoncé took the night off from performing, Jamie Foxx grabbed headlines with his unique spin on "The Star-Spangled Banner." Read on to see the most star-studded moments from the event, including appearances from Jake Gyllenhaal and Nicki Minaj.
